DLR’s New Trains Return: Braking Fixes & Summer Relaunch
The introduction of new, much-improved trains for London’s DLR services faced an unexpected setback shortly after their initial rollout in October 2025. This includes vital braking software upgrades specifically designed to optimize performance in challenging low rail adhesion conditions, such as those experienced during the initial incident. These improvements are currently undergoing rigorous testing on the manufacturer’s dedicated test track, with further trials planned for the DLR network itself.
Once back in service, the new DLR fleet is set to deliver significant benefits for passengers. Key features will include spacious walk-through carriages, providing a more open and accessible environment, alongside real-time travel information displays to keep passengers informed. Comfort will be enhanced by the inclusion of air conditioning, a welcome addition, and practical phone charging points will cater to modern needs. Crucially, the new trains are projected to offer a more-than 50% increase in capacity, addressing growing demand on the network. This gradual rollout will systematically replace the DLR’s aging stock, some of which has been in operation for over 30 years, marking a substantial upgrade for London’s automated light railway system.
