Croydon Considers Beavers for Rewilding: Benefits & Feasibility
The reintroduction of beavers to urban London is gaining momentum, following their successful return to various parts of the UK after a 400-year absence. Naturalist David Attenborough expressed his astonishment at witnessing wild beavers in London, a testament to successful rewilding efforts such as the 2023 reintroduction at Paradise Fields in Greenford. More recently, plans were announced for beavers to inhabit Eastbrookend Country Park in Dagenham.
Now, rewilding experts Citizen Zoo, renowned for their work in Ealing, are collaborating with Croydon Council to explore the viability of introducing a beaver family to South Norwood Country Park. This ambitious project aims to establish London’s largest beaver enclosure and facilitate the reopening of the park’s visitor centre, which has been closed since a 2020 fire. Elliot Newton, Director of Rewilding at Citizen Zoo, noted the park’s remarkable resemblance to Paradise Fields, recognizing a unique opportunity to enhance ecological resilience and deeply engage the local community.
The presence of beavers in urban settings offers numerous significant benefits. These include substantial improvements in water quality, effective mitigation of flooding, and a notable boost in biodiversity, supporting various species such as fish, insects, birds, and other mammals. Additionally, the novelty of beavers naturally sparks increased public interest in local environments, fostering greater community involvement in conservation.
However, the project is not yet finalized. Citizen Zoo has secured funding and initiated a comprehensive feasibility study to ascertain the habitat’s suitability in South Norwood Country Park. This crucial step addresses potential challenges related to the environment’s capacity to sustain a beaver population. A public consultation, alongside community talks and nature walks, is slated for February, ensuring local residents have a voice in this exciting rewilding initiative.
