London’s Art After Dark: West End’s Free Cultural Celebration
Art After Dark, presented by Art of London, transforms the West End from February 3rd to 10th into a vibrant, free week-long celebration of the capital’s nightlife through art and music. This exciting cultural event provides a unique opportunity to explore renowned institutions and discover new artistic experiences after hours, benefiting attendees with unparalleled access to major galleries like the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, and Royal Academy of Arts, away from typical daytime crowds.
A central highlight is “Rise and Shine,” a new al fresco installation by internationally acclaimed artist Lakwena Maciver. Unveiled on February 3rd at Piccadilly Circus, this seven-meter-tall tower of stacked disco lightboxes pays homage to London’s community-led music culture, referencing 1980s and 1990s nightlife. The festival also features the popular Gallery HOP! on February 5th, offering both self-guided and expert-led evening tours of participating galleries such as Bowman Sculpture and White Cube, which remain open until 8 pm.
Beyond galleries, Art After Dark extends to local businesses with special offers and live music. Attendees can enjoy discounts like 30% off cocktails at EllaMia and 15% off à la carte dining at Portrait Restaurant and Whitcomb’s, alongside performances ranging from live jazz at the Haymarket Hotel to 80s/90s bandeoke at BOX Piccadilly. A specific ticketed event is Party After Dark at the National Gallery on February 5th, featuring DJ Bimini and Mia Lily for a £5 entry. Additionally, “Friday Lates” on February 6th allow free after-hours access to the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, and RA until 9 pm, offering a final chance to catch popular temporary exhibitions before they close.
