Trafalgar Square’s Free Passion Play Returns Good Friday 2026
The “Passion of Jesus,” a monumental live theatrical production by Surrey-based Wintershall theatre company, is set to return to Trafalgar Square on Good Friday, 3 April 2026. This free, 90-minute play, performed twice at 12 pm and 3:15 pm, offers an epic and realistic portrayal of Jesus’s arrest, trial, crucifixion, and resurrection, consistently drawing over 20,000 attendees annually. Described as “a gift to Londoners and visitors,” the event has become a significant fixture in central London since its 2010 premiere.
The production features an ambitious scale, involving a 100-strong volunteer cast, scores of Roman centurions, and the dramatic erection of three crucifixes. Live animals, including Pontius Pilate’s horse “George,” a donkey named “Chester,” and doves, add to the spectacle, with experienced handlers ensuring their safety. To enhance accessibility, the performances are mic-ed up, broadcast on large screens around Trafalgar Square, and include British Sign Language interpretation. For those unable to attend, the play is also streamed live on Facebook and available on YouTube afterward.
A significant benefit of this event is its accessibility and profound impact, having earned the Wintershall volunteer group the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2011. While praised as “electric” and “moving,” a key risk is the realistic depiction of the crucifixion, which the organizers caution might be too graphic for younger audience members. Noteworthy past cast members include James Burke-Dunsmore, who played Jesus for nearly 25 years, before secondary school teacher Peter Bergin took over the lead role in 2023. Attendees are advised to arrive approximately 40 minutes early due to anticipated crowds.
